Language as Leadership

How do we include new Americans in appropriate, cutting-edge leadership development?

We don’t often speak of learning language as leadership.

Which is strange- because learning a language is entirely about a willingness to take risks. Learning a language is deeply vulnerable.

Using our voice when we know we will make mistakes, with people of varying degrees of patience, builds confidence and resilience.

In several settings over several years, I experimented with bringing a new level of purpose & leadership development to language learners by designing experiential lessons, both in English & Spanish.

I had the honor of experimenting with how to create original language and leadership courses in four places— in 2 NYC boroughs with one of NYC’s largest organizations serving immigrants, Make the Road, in New York; a community college in North Carolina; a public middle school in Boston; and at a language school in El Salvador.
